Whilst developing specialist SEO I’ve been sending a lot of emails, the process probably isn’t particularly scientific but hey selling isn’t easy and with this site being relatively new i’m not yet generating notable traffic volumes. Here is a detailed guide to my highly specialized sales process:-
Step 1 - Get the Yellow Pages!
Step 2 - Start at “A”, pick the first industry that I come across that I feel will profit from good seo
Step 3 - Identify the primary search phrases for that industry using keyword analysis tools
Step 4 - Have a gander on Google to ensure that the top sites aren’t huge fortune 500 companies, I’ll happily take them on if someone wants to pay me for the 12 hours a day it’ll take to compete!
Step 5 - Identify sites with issues, drop them an email saying “your missing out on xxxxxx thousand potential new customers, interested?”
So far i’ve identified three main problems with my approach and seo generally:-
1. It’s a scam - to be fair I can’t blame people for thinking this, I must receive a dozen emails a day promising to deliver no 1 spots on Google overnight. You know the ones I mean, “you could be top of google - $49.95, can you afford not to”. This is frustrating for the simple fact that I’m actually offering a legitimate service. I know that I can increase traffic levels considerably and no I don’t promise number one spots overnight. Theres more that one way to skin a cat.
2. SEO? what’s SEO? - and this is coming from marketing managers and marketing directors. ok, I don’t want to offend anyone but if your in a position within a company where your responsible for marketing activities it’s your responsibility to have some understanding of the web. Lets look at a few basic facts:-
81% of people find what they are looking for using the internet (forrester research)
88% of internet users have made at least one purchase online in the last 6 months (ACNielsen Research)
Sites in the top 1-10 places receive 80% more traffic than the sites in positions 11-30.
If your not aware of the above then to be perfectly frank you may just be a little behind the times, the dot com boom never ended and internet sales volumes have never been higher. However there are only so many 1-10 slots available in your industry and if your not in one of them you will be losing business and market share.
3. I have an SEO and my sites fine - Erm, ok.. I wasn’t lying in the email I sent, there really are all those people looking for your product. They just aren’t finding your site. This has been perhaps the most annoying of the three for me. Why? because normally the “seo” is actually the same guy that designed the site, hey look at me I populated the meta tags now i’m an SEO?! Well, actually no your not! I don’t sell myself as a web designer because I’m not, I’m awful with colours. I designed this site, see what I mean?
A large percentage of web marketing takes place without touching your site. If your “seo” can’t explain why this is the case then your site is NOT in safe online hands.
Apologies for the rant folks, SEO can be frustrating at times.. selling SEO can be hugely frustrating. SEO is a fantastic, hugely beneficial thing to those that have the insight to realise it.
